Installing
| How do I switch
between the electronic license version and the hardware
key version? |
STAR.LOG
Versions: 6
2007-10-04 |
| Version 6 of STAR.LOG
can be used with or without a hardware key. The version
without a hardware key uses an electronic
license system instead. There are separate versions
of each STAR.LOG product (STRIP.LOG, MUD.LOG, and HORIZONTAL.LOG)
for use with a hardware key vs. electronic licensing.
To install the electronic license version instead of the
hardware key version:
- In the Control Panel, run Add/Remove Programs (Programs
and Features, in Vista).
- Find WellSight Systems STAR.LOG 6 and click Change.
- When prompted to Modify, Repair, or Remove, choose Modify.
- On the Custom Setup window, use the pull-down menus
to disable the installed product(s) under HASP HL and
click Next.
- Repeat the above procedure, this time enable the product(s)
under CrypKey. Be sure to also enable the appropriate
CrypKey driver for your version of Windows (Vista or other).
To switch to the hardware key version, follow the procedure
above, disabling the CrypKey product(s) and driver first,
then enabling the HASP HL product(s).
Note: you should only have one type of version (hardware
key or electronic license) of your product(s) installed
at one time. |
| Can I install
both V5 and V6 on my computer? |
STAR.LOG 5,
6
2006-08-22 |
| Yes. Version 5 and
6 install in separate locations such that they can both
be installed at once. Desktop icons for Version 6 identify
their major version (e.g. "STRIP.LOG 6").
On the Start Menu, Version 5 programs appear in a program
group called "WellSIght Systems V5",
and Version 6 programs appear in a program group called
"WellSIght Systems V6".
Note: Shortcuts for Version 5 programs only identify their
major version (e.g. "STRIP.LOG 5") for the
latest release of Version 5. Earlier versions simply
say, e.g. STRIP.LOG. |

| How do I configure
Windows to automatically launch a WellSight program when
I double-click on a strip log file? |
All Programs
2007-04-13 |
| WellSight programs
automatically configure Windows to launch the appropriate
program when you double-click on a strip log file. This
is done when you install the program by associating the
log file name extension (e.g. .SLG, .HL6) with the program.
However, this association can be changed on you, e.g., by
other software being installed.
To re-establish the file name extension associations for
a WellSight program:
- In the Control Panel, run Add/Remove Programs (Programs
and Features, in Vista).
- Find the WellSight program, e.g. "WellSight Systems
STAR.LOG 6", and click Change/Remove.
- When prompted to Modify, Repair, or Remove, choose Repair.
Sometimes the default associations are not what you want.
For example, you may want your vertical log files to be
opened by MUD.LOG, but any horizontal log files should be
opened by the WellSight Log Viewer. To change the default
file name extension associations:
- Right-click on a log file and select Open With >
Choose Program.
- Select or Browse to the WelSight program file, e.g.
"C:\Program Files\WellSight Systems\Log Viewer 6\Viewer.exe".
- Check "Always Use the Selected Program" and
click OK.

2006-02-10 |
| When
I try to un-install a WellSight product using the Add/Remove
Programs applet in the Control Panel, I get an error message
saying that it cannot find an MSI file.
First, Restart Windows and try installing the product again
from the setup program. You may be prompted to Modify/Remove/Repair
the installation. Choose Remove. This should un-install
the WellSight product.
If this doesn't work, then you may try the following advanced
procedure. Caution: The following procedure involves
editing the Windows Registry database. You are
strongly advised to consult with a Windows systems expert
to perform this procedure. In addition, you are strongly
advised to backup the Windows Registry before this procedure
is carried out.
- Backup the Windows system registry. Consult a Windows
systems expert or the Windows on-line help for details.
If you are not able to do this, do not precede with this
procedure.
- Note the full name of the product you want to uninstall.
It is the name that appears in the Add/Remove Programs
applet. It will also appear in the title bar of each window
when you run the setup program and in error messages related
to installing and uninstalling the product. Example full
product names are:
- WellSight Log Viewer

- WellSight Systems
- WellSight Systems V5
- WellSight Systems STAR.LOG 6
- LOG.ANALYSIS
- Run the windows registry editor:
- Click the Start Button
- Choose Run
- Type: regedit and click OK.
- Select Edit Menu > Find and search for the full product
name
- Depending on the version of Windows and the WellSight
product and version, you may find several different
instances of the full product name
- Find the instance that is in one of the following
locations:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software]Microsoft\Installer\Products
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\installer\products
- Delete the entire Node that contains the Key with
the full product name as its value. This Node's label
is a long alpha-numeric string and it is located directly
under the Products node.
- Re-run the setup program for the WellSight product.

| Can I license

STAR.LOG 6
Log Manager 6
2006-06-24 |
| Yes,
however to license two products, say STRIP.LOG and HORIZONTAL.LOG
at the same time, you must configure them one at a time.
For example:
- Run STRIP.LOG, press Enter when the CrypKey splash window
appears.
- Copy the site code from the License Configuration window
and send it to WellSight.
- When you get the site key from WellSight, enter it into
the License Configuration window.
- Now repeat the process for HORIZONTAL.LOG.
It will not work to generate both site codes and send them
to WellSight at the same time. If you do, then one or both
of the site keys will display the error message:
"The key you entered was not a valid Site Key."
If this happens, contact WellSight to arrange a new site
key(s). |
| Can I run a
CrypKey protected product over a network? |
STAR.LOG 6
Log Manager 6
2007-08-13 |
| Yes. Install the
product on a computer that is running Window 2000/XP/2003.
This computer will act as the license server. When you purchase
the product you will be given a special Site Key that will
enable other computers on the network to run the product
using the license on the license server. The Site Key will
enable a maximum number of computers to run the product
at one time.
For terminal servers, each workstation requests a license
from the TS, so the same maximum number of concurrent users
are allowed.
Note: the following procedure is new as of Version 6.1a.
Users with versions older than 6.1a should upgrade
to the latest version.
Network Server Installation
- Install the product on the license server, selecting
the Network Server option.
- For the WellSight Log Manager, choose the Network
Server setup type.
- For STAR.LOG, choose the Custom setup type then ensure
that the Network Server feature is selected and that
the Network Client feature is not.
- Run the product on the license server and obtain a Network
Site Key from WellSight.
- Install the Network Site Key.
- Run the Network License Manager from the WellSight Systems
program group on the Start menu.
- Click New Server Wizard to create a license server.
- Click Browse and select the appropriate License Tag
File:
| Product |
License Tag File |
| Log Manager 6 |
C:\Program Files\WellSight Systems\Log Manager 6\VIEWER.EXE |
| STRIP.LOG or MUD.LOG |
C:\Program Files\WellSight Systems\StarLog 6\VERT.LIC |
| HORIZONTAL.LOG |
C:\Program Files\WellSight Systems\StarLog 6\HORZ.LIC |
| Note: For WIndows Vista, the above
files are located in C:\ProgramData, instead of
C:\Program Files |
- On the subsequent pages of the New Server Wizard, specify
the Domains, Workgroups, Machines (workstations), and
Users that can access licenses from this server.
- See NLM.pdf in the installation folder for more details.
- For more advanced network license management, run the
Enterprise License Manager. See ELM.pdf in the installation
folder for more details.
- Ensure that the product runs directly on the server.
Network Client Installation
- Install the product on the workstation, selecting the
Network Client option.
- For the WellSight Log Manager, choose the Network
Client setup type.
- For STAR.LOG, choose the Custom setup type then
ensure that the Network Client feature is selected
and that the Network Server feature is not.
- Run the Client License Configuration tool from the WellSight
Systems program group on the Start menu. Use this tool
to select the domains, workgroups, or servers from which
to obtain network license seats. See CLC Wizard.pdf in
the installation folder for more details.
Notes:
- A Site Key is not required on each networked workstation,
just on the license server.
- If a network user runs the program on a workstation
without installing the Network Client feature, this will
activate a one-time 30-day trial license on the workstation.
Network administrators should not allow workstation users
to run in this mode as it will lead to confusion when
the trial license expires. If this happens, install the
Network Client feature using Add/Remove Programs (Programs
and Features in Vista) and the workstation will access
the network license server.

the CrypKey driver and reinstall it. Note this is an advanced
procedure recommended for expert users only.
- Open a cmd prompt window and cd to "C:\Program
Files\WellSight Systems\StarLog 6" or "...\Log
Manager 6".
- Run "setupex /U".
- Restart your computer.
- Open a cmd prompt window and cd to the same directory.
- Run "setupex".
- Open Control > Administrative Tools > Services
and verify that the "CrypKey License" service
is running.

| Yes.
Any of the STAR.LOG 6 products and the WellSight Log
Manager can be run over a network using an Electronic
License. The license allows a maximum number of workstations
to use the product at one time. This licensing method is
sometimes referred to as "floating seat" licensing
because a single license can "float" from one
workstation to another. This affords a greater level of
flexibility for your corporation and requires fewer licenses
to enable all of your users.

| How do I find
a printer to print logs? |
All Products
All Versions
2006-02-10 |
| When
shopping for a printer to use with your WellSight Systems
product, take the following into consideration:
- Do you require continuous feed (either tractor feed
or pressure feed)?
- What is the maximum length of log you will be printing
(some printers support continuous feed printing, but with
a maximum number of pages)?
- Do you require color?
- Will you also be using the printer to print black and
white documents? If so, look for a printer that has a
separate black ink cartridge to reduce operating costs.
- Will you be moving the printer around a lot, e.g. to
the field? If so, be sure that the printer is rugged enough.
- How long is the warrantee period and is there a local
service shop?
- Before you buy, try it out. Take your notebook computer
or a CD of the software to the store and try printing
a sample log. Check for the speed, noise, ruggedness,
and quality of output.
- Do not automatically buy the cheapest printer. First
determine what the operating costs will be, particularly
ink cartridges.
- Ask your salesman for a copy of the latest Windows printer
driver software on CD. The version that is in the box
is usually out of date and may have problems that have
been fixed in the latest driver version. Alternatively,
you can download the latest driver from the manufacturer's
website.

| HP DesignJet Plotters |
- Starting in version 6.2d, the WellSight
Log Manager introduces a new Plotting feature (File

gaps between headers have been removed as has
the extra white space at the end of the log.
- The
plotter must be able to accept data in HP-RTL format.
This is a subset of the HP-GL format and
is supported by most, if not all, HP DesignJet
plotters.

| How do I print
a continuous log with no gaps between pages? |
All Products
All Versions
2007-08-14 |
| If
you are having trouble getting your log to print continuously
with no break between pages, check the printer setup for
"scaling", "page length" or "margin"
settings. Be sure that the page length is 11" and the
top and bottom margins are zero, or as close as possible
to zero. Set scaling to "none" or "100%".
Some printers require you to choose "banner" mode
both in the printer setup dialog and on the printer itself. |
| I'm having
problems printing a log file. |
All Products
All Versions
2007-08-14 |
| Printing
problems are almost always caused by system configuration
problems. Please go through the following suggestions to
help identify the source of the problem. Each bulleted item
is a complete suggestion. Try printing again after each
suggestion.
- Turn your computer and printer off for a minute then
turn them on.
- Exit all programs except for WellSight's.
- Update to the latest printer driver from the printer
manufacturer's web site.
- Check for disk space on your system disk (the disk where
your Windows or WinNT folder is - usually C:). Large logs
can temporarily require 100 MB or more of disk space to
print.
- Turn off spooling. Open Start Menu|Settings|Printers
or Start Menu|Printers and Faxes, select your printer,
and choose File Menu|Properties. On the
Details or Advanced tab under Spool
Settings choose Print directly to printer.
- See if you can print:
- anything from a standard Windows program (e.g.
Notepad, Paint)
- other log files (e.g. the default log or WSI's
sample logs)
- your log file with an earlier version of WSI's
program
- to another printer
- to the same printer from another computer
- at a different quality or dots-per-inch resolution
- with color turned on or off
- Try different printer emulation modes if your printer
supports them
- Change printers - see our current suggestions

| Can I print
logs on a plotter? |
Log Manager
Version 6.2d and later
2008-03-04 |
| The
WellSight Log Manager supports
plotting to HP DesignJet and compatible plotters. The plotter
must accept data in HP-RTL format.
This is a subset of the HP-GL format and is supported by
most, if not all, HP DesignJet plotters.
The plotting feature bypasses the Windows driver
for the plotter. This is necessary to get around the page
size limitations. As a result, the settings in the driver
are not available (e.g. rotation, scaling, color control,
print quality). However, you can control many of these
settings directly on the control panel of most plotters.
|
| An error occurred
saving log file C:\ . . . \autosave.slg |
STAR.LOG
V4, V5, V6
2006-02-10 |
| STAR.LOG
attempts to save an AUTOSAVE file once every 10 minutes.
If that file exists, but is read-only, or the directory
containing it is
read-only, then you will get this error message.
If you have more than one instance of STAR.LOG running
each instance would attempt to write an AUTOSAVE.SLG file
every 10 minutes. If one instance tries to open the file
while another instance is writing it, this could also cause
the first error message.
This problem can be compounded if your computer is allowed
to stand-by or hibernate. If this happens, then the internal
timers in both instances of STAR.LOG might be synchronized
when your computer awakes.
Then when the two instances try to save to the same autosave
file at
once, one begins writing while the other is unable to create
the file.
WellSight is investigating possible solutions, but in the
meantime we suggest the following work-arounds:
- Only run one instance of STAR.LOG.
- Shut down STAR.LOG (at least all instances but one)
before allowing your computer to stand-by or hibernate.
- If you need two or more instances, open log files from
different folders
or save them to different folders. This way they will
be saving different
autosave files.

| How can I create
a zero reference line in my curve track? |
STAR.LOG
All Versions
2006-12-21 |
| It
is easy to add a reference line in your curve track at zero
or any other value for that matter. Simply add a curve in
Layout Designer with no units and a space character for
its name, i.e. " ". Now Edit Curve Data, select
the new (unnamed) curve and click Power Edit. Specify you
log's entire depth range and set the value to zero (or whatever).
You may need to adjust the curve scale for the reference
line and you can edit the line's thickness, color and other
properties as needed. |
| How
can I display all the legends and scales for 10 curves in
a Curve Track? |
STAR.LOG
All Versions
2006-12-21 |
| Currently,
only the first 7 curves can be displayed correctly in the
legend of the Track Header. This is a limitation that will
be remedied in a future release. In HORIZONTAL.LOG, a work-around
for this problem that may work for you is to make the track
wider.
A similar problem in HORIZONTAL.LOG is that if you have
too many curves with separate scales, the scale names and
values will overlap. If all the curves have the same scale,
the solution is to use one set of scales for all curves.
In Layout Designer, uncheck "Separate Scales"
for the Curve Layer. |

| How do I convert
ROP from ft/hr to min/ft (and other curve conversions)? |
STAR.LOG
All Versions
2006-09-28 |
| To
perform curve conversions beyond what the Power Data Entry
dialog supports, simply export your curve data to a .DAT
file (File menu|Export|Curve Data), open it in Excel or
another spreadsheet program, perform the conversion there,
then re-import the data into STAR.LOG (File menu|Import|Curve
Data). |
| Can I paste
Data Curve or Survey data directly into STAR.LOG?
|
STAR.LOG
All Versions
2006-06-13 |
| No,
pasting numeric data is not supported. However, you can
easily import Data Curve or Survey data from a comma- or
TAB-delimited ASCII file. See topic "Import" in
the on-line help. |

| Microsoft
Office installs a virtual printer called Microsoft Office
Document Imaging. To preview your log, print it as usual
but select the Microsoft Office Document Imaging printer.
If you do not have this component of MS Office on your
computer, you can use Adobe Acrobat or
another PDF printer driver to preview your log. |
| Using Adobe
Acrobat and PDF Format |
STAR.LOG 5,
6
Log Viewer 5, 6
Log Manager 6
2007-05-25 |
| You
can create a PDF file of your strip log using Adobe
Acrobat. (WellSight has tested Acrobat versions 5 and
7. Other versions may also work.)
To create a PDF document:
- In STAR.LOG, select File Menu > Print
- Choose the Acrobat Distiller "printer".
- Set the page width to suit your log (e.g. 8.5x11, 11x17,
or custom). Note that the page length does not need to
be the length of your log. In fact, keeping the page length
to a standard length like 11" or 17" will ensure
that your PDF document can be printed on most printers.
- You may also need to ensure that the fonts are included
in the PDF. In Acrobat 7, open the Adobe PDF Document
Properties dialog (via Print Setup) and make the following
settings:
- On the Paper/Quality tab click Advanced
- Under Graphic > Image Color Management set
TrueType Font = Download as Softfont
- Under Document Options > PostScript Options
set TrueType Font Download Option = Bitmap
- On the Adobe PDF Settings tab
- Uncheck "Do not send fonts to "Adobe
PDF"
- Print the document. You will be prompted for a file
name for the PDF file.
To print the PDF file:
- Open the PDF file in either Adobe Acrobat or in the
free Adobe
Reader.
- Select the printer you wish to use. Configure
it to print continuously (e.g. choose banner mode).
- Ensure that any print settings that would Scale, Shrink,
Expand, Rotate, or Center your printout are disabled.
- Print.

2006-02-10 |
| Often,
ROP, Gas, or Gamma data are provided in an ASCII (plain
text) file. In order to import these files, all header and
footer information must first be removed as follows:
- Open the ASCII file in your word processor.
- Delete all text except for the actual columns of numeric
data.
- Save the data file as a "text file".
- Now you will be able to import the data.

HORIZONTAL.LOG
Versions: All
2006-02-10 |
| If
you want to calculate net pay, from Gamma Ray for example,
you can temporarily change your scale so the maximum GR
reading is one full deflection of the curve (0 to 45 API
unit).
Then simply count and add up the meters in the interval
with no cross hatching, and you have your net pay. Now switch
the GR scale back to the standard 0 to 150 API units. |
